Vintage weddings are right back in vogue

Themed weddings are more popular now than they have ever been; and one of the most popular themes is the vintage look.

Everything from cars to food can be themed to match up with a particular period in history – or the car can always be dropped altogether in favour of some four-legged transport if your dream has always been to have a Jane Austen style Regency wedding or a decadent fin de siecle celebration.

As it’s your wedding there is no reason why you can’t mix and match styles from different time periods in order to create your perfect combination. One of the most fun parts of having a historically-themed wedding is dress shopping. While there are plenty of vintage shops selling genuine wedding dresses from the past, even modern designers are cashing in on the craze for all things bygone, creating modern wedding dresses that boast fashion features from generations ago.

Colour is the first choice that the blushing bride has to make; and it is far from as straightforward as you might imagine. The traditional white wedding dress is a fairly recent invention, dating from the earlier years of the 20th century. Before then, brides would get dressed in a whole array of coloured fabrics. With so many modern women finding it inappropriate to wear a virginal white dress on their wedding day, why not choose a bold colour and make a really big impact as you walk down the aisle?

Corsets were a standard feature of most dresses in years gone by, and the fashion has returned with a vengeance. In fact, many women wear corsets as fashion items these days, refusing to hide the beautifully-made pieces underneath other clothes. On your wedding day, it might be more appropriate to keep your corset out of view, but you can still use it to create the kind of slim waist and full bust needed to pull off dress styles from the 18th and 19th centuries.
