Great pictures are a lasting memorial that will provide a lot of pleasure for a long time; on the other hand, not-so-good or downright lousy images will be a huge disappointment that’s just as hard to forget.

When planning your wedding, one of the decisions you’ll need to make is who is going to take the pictures that will make or break your day.  Here are a few of the things you’ll want to look for in a photographer.

The first move should be a viewing of some of the photographers previous work.  If there is a demonstrated ability to capture special moments, both formal and informal, that’s a crucial point.  If you like what you see, chances are you’ll like it even more when you know all the folks in the photos.

Also, meeting the photographer well in advance will tell you whether he or she is someone you can be at ease with, and who can ‘blend in’ with your guests and wedding party.  A good photographer will have the right equipment and plenty of spare parts and film, but more important, be able to mingle when it’s required, and be unobtrusive whilst catching the special moments that often pass without notice in the general hubbub.

Candid shots by amateurs can be quite delightful, but those same shots by a professional and really competent photographer take the guesswork out of the picture, so to speak.  You’ll undoubtedly want to shop for the best price, and you will find a lot of excellent options, both from large studios and from a multitude of smaller operations.  Beware the grandiose deals that offer thousands of shots,  a lot of free prints and a set of wine glasses; you may love the glasses but hate the shots.

Remember that in photography, as in everything else, you usually get what you pay for.  If you want excellence, look for examples in the potential photographer’s work, and make your choice based on what you see.
