Guests at a wedding expect to drink, eat, and in general enjoy themselves at a wedding and the bride’s parents place a great deal of effort into producing the perfect wedding reception. The wedding cake is the centrepiece for this occasion and the function in general all the way down to the fact that it is considered bad luck not to have at least a small slice of the cake.

As tradition demands, the cake must be cut directly before the desert option is served. However, for receptions that take place early in the evening or in the afternoon it is traditional to serve the cake as guests start to arrive. Tradition also demands that the bride and groom slice the cake and eat the first slice in harmony as a symbol of their love and a testament to their vows. After that the rest of the cake is cut up by a server or another member of the wedding party.

Choosing the correct wedding cake can be hard because there are plenty of colours and flavours on the market which is why some people choose wedding cakes that have different flavour choices on every tier. Although most people still like the white icing visual appeal, there is still a growing trend of yellow and pink iced cakes. Some people even choose to go with mocha or chocolate because on your wedding day it is completely up to you to choose what your taste buds demand.

When it comes to planning a wedding there are dozens of things that you have to take care of in order for it to go off without a hitch, but there is only one thing that you will still have to deal with (besides your mate), the cake. Everyone loves a great piece of wedding cake, so here are a few tips to make sure that the cake melting in your mouth is pure perfection both now and later.

First off, always ask the confectioner if you can have a tasting before you place the actual order. Some will even let you sample frostings or provide you with multiple taste testing opportunities.

Second, ask to see the baker’s portfolio so you can get an idea of their style and their ability to pull of the perfect cake design. A great baker should have at least a few dozen photos to share with you that can also be great inspiration for how you would like your cake to look.

Along the same lines, this would be a good time to find out if the baker will custom design a cake for you or if he or she only works from a template selection. Depending on what you want this may make or break the deal.

Last, ideally you want a cake to baked less than ten days before the weeding and frosted within two days of the wedding, so if this is not possible move on because your cake will not be optimally fresh.
